The Origin of Gracie Jiu Jitsu

Gracie Jiu Jitsu also known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most influential martial arts in the UFC and  in self defense situation for many years. Designed by Helio Gracie he took the idea that a smaller weaker opponent could beat a bigger stronger opponent threw superior skill. He developed Gracie Jiu Jitsu using submission holds, joint locks and choke holds to do accomplish these feats. Gracie Jiu Jitsu became prominent around the world since Royce Gracie won the 1st, 2nd and 4th Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Fighting Style of Gracie Jiu Jitsu

Gracie BJJ emphasizes taking your opponent to the ground to finish their opponents. There are many positions and submissions and counters in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Some of the famous positions in Gracie Jiu Jitsu are the guard, back mount and full mount. A successful submission hold in a competitions is the end of a match with the opponent taping of facing serious injury. In self defense submissions will leave you opponents with dislocated joints or unconsciousness.

At Ivey league Mixed Martial arts located in Severna Park Maryland we train both No Gi and Gi Brazilians Jiu Jitsu. No Gi is what you would see in the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC for short. This style we were traditionally gym shorts and a T shirt and in this style grabbling the cloths are not allowed. In our Gi class we were traditional Jiu Jitsu Gi’s or Judo Gi’s are acceptable as well. In this class Gi add a additional amount of moves in various positions allowing to use you opponents clothing against them. This style can be used on people who are wearing Jackets in self defense situations. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great was to stay in shape and have fun while your doing it. We offer beginner intermediate and advanced  Gracie Jiu Jitsu as well as kids classes so there is a program for everyone.
